Does look a bit like Max Payne, though.
I think it's going to be another failure, just like the Hitman movie.
Yeah. That was my first impression too: "Max Payne? Couldn't be." I had to see it a second time to get over the denial. The bird wings thing you keep seeing just doesn't belong and the stuff they show of "Max Payne" like the line about him not being on duty just doesn't coincide with the games. Max Payne is a troubled man out for answers. The trailer makes him out to be a bad ass cop. It just doesn't make sense.

FordGT90Concept said:
Yeah, but those references are metaphorical in the game--not actual. To the character they are real but, as I recall, it only ever happened inside of his house (or was the police station once?). I think it is a bad call for them to turn the concept into an actuality.

I think you are correct (about those references being metaphorical), but considering that the fallen angels are not actually there (it looks like we're getting a look at what the drug users can see), but a figment of the imagination/hallucinations, I think it is actually a good idea. Much better then seeing yet another stoned-out-of-his-mind druggie in yet another action movie. Its so... generic.

Now IF I am incorrect about them being hallucinations, then I'll eat humble pie. BUT it honestly looks (to me) like they are doing the theme correctly, bringing the realities of the Valkyr drug to life (so to speak).
Are you saying that games have more substance than movies in general or when it comes to porting with a movie that could potentially be made into a game? I say this because if you mean the first version, then I very much disagree. In terms of substance, games don't even come close compared to movies like No Country for Old Men, 12 Angry Men, etc.

Edit: I think you mean movies just don't have the necessary composition to make good games, and not necessarily substance.

FordGT90Concept said:
Ports from movie to game are generally pretty bad. Movies just don't have the substance that makes quality games...

You know how directors use the thumb and pointer fingers to make a box to picture the scene? Game developers can't use that philosophy because what happens behind the camera could kill you. Film industry is 2D and static; game industry is 3D and dynamic.

Another consideration is how FPS games (which are the shortest) need to play for at least 10 hours. Films rarely reach 1/3 that. So to turn a game into a film, they have to add a lot of fluff which usually takes the shape of mindless killing while moving from point A to point B. It rarely involves a lot of extra substance that successful games need.

I guess the point I am trying to make here is that a game which is a wanna-be movie is better than a movie which is a wanna-be game. I mean, the first two Max Payne games were extremely cinematic--it is a defining feature of the game. As such, it translates great to the big screen. The reverse is rarely true...

I can only name one decent game where that isn't entirely true: A Bee Movie. They added a lot of substance that wasn't in the movie. It was by no means grade "A" substance but it was effective (mission-based features with buyable content). A game that failed was Spider-Man 2. I had it beat in just a few hours without breaking a sweat on the first attempt--pathetic. Godfather was pretty good at filling in the holes but again, certainly not grade "A."

Basically what I am saying is it is a great idea to make a movie out of Max Payne but it is a bad idea to make a game out of the Max Payne film. It would effectively be another Tomb Raider where the games went south while the movies took over the franchise. I would rather they make Max Payne 3 than run the series straight into the ground with a movie-centric franchise, ya know?
