I've been reading around in different forums and this has been happening to many people.Will it boot off any other type of bootable CD, like memtest86 or Hiren's Boot CD? Did you try a DVD?

Nope, doesn't show up at all.

I will try this as soon as possible, though.

EDIT: Have tried continuously hitting a button to no avail. It can't be the CD either, as two different CD's don't work. What's interesting is that the CD drive does show activity. The lamp blinks, and you can hear it read from the CD, but then GRUB comes on anyways.

Does the message "Press any key to boot from CD" show up at all? If it doesn't keep pressing a key just in case the message is not viewable at the time. I have seen this happen in several computers.

If the CD is not original (burnt copy), you may try a different brand of CD, or try a DVD.

Hi all,

My roommate has an Acer Aspire 1690 WLMI running Ubuntu 8.04 on it. He want's to install Windows XP on it in order to play some games, but the Laptop refuses to boot from the CD. The boot order in the BIOS is correctly set to boot from CD first, and manually booting from CD using F12 does not work either. He has tried two different Win XP CD's (which both work on my PC). The Laptop boots no problem to any Linux Live CD.

Any help???
