In the server world energy consumption isn't the issue, performance per watt is. Computers grow exponentially faster, every few years or so network speeds increase 10 fold or so. I'm really not worried.

If traffic gets to be too much for the system to handle, prices will go up to curb demand. which will result in upgrades to the computers and reductions in prices from competition (assuming the govenrment stays out of it). All is as it should be.

What's REALLY going on here? Is Bapat advancing a political and/or financial agendum?

Funny, I thought power requirements for a given level of performance were decreasing.

"'In an energy-constrained world, we cannot continue to grow the footprint of the internet … we need to rein in the energy consumption,' said Subodh Bapat, vice-president at Sun Microsystems...."

"Each server burns more watts than the previous generation and each watt costs more," he said. "If you compound all of these trends, you have the perfect storm."--Subodh Bapat, vice-president at Sun Microsystem

If he was saying the raw data and power requirements for the internet were increasing, I'd believe that. Or even if he said each server is delivering incredibly more performance than its predecessor, along with increased power requirements due to demand...but that is NOT what he said.

HDD watts/GB have gone down substantially, and CPU and memory power consumption has gone down as the performance has increased amazingly and die size has decreased compared to even a few years ago.

So, why is he saying things the way he says? (and by the way, I'd like to state that IMO he's smart enough to know exactly what he is saying when he's talking to the media and/or politicians)

"Web providers must limit internet's carbon footprint, say experts"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/may/03/internet-carbon-footprint

"Soaring internet usage 'is threatening future of Google and YouTube' "
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1177011/Soaring-intern...uTube.html
