Hi Ray,

I agree with your overall assessment about the Tyan Manual(s). Furthermore I also agree with you about the poor layout as regards Pin Arrangement rules and consistantcy. Tyan may even agree about this.

I don't have the same board. I have the S2462ung. It has similar errors.

The J21 jumper has a flipped arrangement. The J52/J53 error is repeated on this board. Tyan has issued an addendum for the Tyan s2462 and it's available on the Tyan Website. You may have been the person responsible for them creating the addendum, who knows?

I've spent over a week now (9 days and counting) and I'm still having trouble with not being able to get into the BIOS SETUP menu's. I've yet to get all the way through the BIOS SETUP Menu's before the program hangs.
Tyan MP S2460 Motherboard Problems PART 1

Hi Folks,
I think this should / could be titled " BUYER BEWARE ".

First :

I want to address a VERY SERIOUS Board Layout / Board Design / User Manual Error(s)

These errors are particularly addressed to the s2460 MotherBoard revision 1.03 / MotherBoard User Manual revision 1.03.

Which means that the following link & the advice there defines the manuals for revision version 1.0 & 1.03
http://www.tyan.com/support/html/f_tg_mp.html

I already had a manual with my motherboard .... clearly stating on the front cover Motherboard User's Manual
Revision 1.03
Document Part # D1461 - 103

This next section is directly cut & pasted from the tyan site

Tiger MP (S2460) FAQ Updated 02-01-2002

Notice the circled marking " 01M0AA ". If you have this marking on the
DIMM corner of your S2460, please use manual rev.1.03; otherwise
use manual rev.1.00

From the above i deduced i had a ver revision 1.03 board i had no other way of knowing, my board was doa (dead on arrival) as it came already installed in the cube server case (with 400w power supply i ordered) i "assumed" all m/b jumpers were set to defaults & the connectors to jumper j12 (bottom right hand corner of the board) were correctly connected to power/reset switches on the front case & the various light diode connectors were also correctly pinned to j12.

ALSO that jumpers j52,j53,j48,j49 were correctly configured as per the revision 1.03 manual's settings for default (probably 266Mhz)

That was up until all possible tests were carried out with alternative power supply cable, power supply, keyboard, mouse etc.

THEN .................. I started to recheck the motherboard with the manual AGAIN in my hand.

Jumper j53 was shorted between pins 1 - 2 the manual said pins 2 - 3.

I changed the j53 jumper to short pins 2 -3 as the manual laid out on PAGE 13 for 266Mhz FSB.

Booted up once again & got the all too familiar (right from the first attempt) no cpu fans running, no case fans running, no pretty coloured lights on at the front of the case, and a blank monitor screen.

DOES ANYONE HAVE A " SINGLE CLUE " AS TO WHAT WAS WRONG ????????

ANSWER:

Please pick up your supplied Motherboard User Manual revision 1.03 & be able to look closely at your S2460 Motherboard .....

PLEASE turn to PAGE 11

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO FOLLOW THIS THROUGH WITH US ALL U MAY SORT OUT YOUR NO POST / NO BOOT PROBLEMS ( I do hope so )

******* AND - A BIG ATTENTION CALL TO TYAN *******

And any tech folks please observe the normal acceptable electronic circuit layout principals (in your mind) re a circuit board ......
notice that " **** PIN 1 **** " weather header block(s) ( rows of pins ) or jumper pin block(s) are always kept uniform from top to bottom & left to right of your hobby electronic project or a purchased electronic circuit board / motherboard.
Observe on PAGE11 all jumper blocks running horizontally have a 1 ( the figure 1 ) to the " left " of the first pin or if running vertically at the left side of the top pin, EVEN the ide/ultra connectors are correctly marked with a 1 beside the first pin on the " top left " hand side of the top row of pins .......... this is all
A OK !!!!!!!!!!!!

BUT has anyone realized .....

THE GLARING HORROR OF AN ERROR ?

LOOK at the screen printing of jumper j12 physically on YOUR OWN PHYSICAL BOARD ....

Found right beside the capacitor which is at the right hand end of the last 32bit pci slot......

are all the descriptions of the front panel connectors with pin assignments, shown from left to right.

IF your eye sight is bad get a strong magnifing glass .....

There are 2 (two) errors with this board

1) LACK OF THE NUMBER ONE PIN ORENTATATION AND ALL PININGS OF J12 (as per acceptable industary standards for circuit board layout)

2) TOTAL LACK OF IDENTIFACATION OF WHERE PIN 1 IS IN RELATIONSHIP TO J12 IN THE Motherboard User's Manual Revision 1.03 Page(s) 12 & 13

3) KEEPING IN MIND *** ALL *** OTHER PIN 1 (ONE) MARKINGS ON THE BOARD ITSELF & IN THE MANUAL THE " MAGNIFING GLASS " TREATMENT OF THE AREA BETWEEN THE CAPACITOR BESIDE THE LAST 32 BIT PCI SLOT AND JUMPER J12 WOULD FURTHER LEAD *******ANY ******* TECH , SYSTEMS ADMIN , DOING UPGRADES, HOME USER , TO INCORRECTLY PIN THE MOTHERBOARD TO CHASSIE / CASE POWER ON/OFF, RESET /SLEEP SWITCH & ALL LED LIGHTS CONCERNED WITH THE CASES FRONT PANEL .........................

******************INCORRECTLY*******************

indeed the wrong way round ...

working from left to right instead of right to left.

Folks your puter sure ain't gonna go if the power switch wires are NOT connected correctly.

BAD BAD BAD CIRCUIT DESIGN LAYOUT (IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER ) OF THE S2460 MOTHERBOARD TYAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everything else as far as identifing the pin 1 of other connectors & jumper pins is correct ......

EXCEPT for j12

**********************************************************
FURTHER TO THE J52,J53,J48,J49 JUMPER BLOCKS & SETTINGS :

Setting jumpers j52,j48,j49 to the revision 1.03 manual settings for 266Mhz will all work fine on a version revision 1.03 S2460 board as long as j53 is set with pins 1 & 2 shorted/pin block on 1 & 2 ....

Only dammed way i got the S2460 to post / boot at all.

THAT WAS ************ AFTER ************** I COMPLETELY REPINNED J12 CORRECTLY WORKING FROM RIGHT TO LEFT......
________________
l_______________] < from this end first.

In some defence of Tyan if you look closely between the right hand end of J12 and FAN 1 connector u will see the figures
1

2

This is the pin orentation for J12

( From right to left ... NOT left to right )

THEN

The two processor fans spun up for the first time
The Three cassis fans spun up for the first time
The Power On Diode Light lit up for the first time

BUT ***** STILL ***** i had NO POST / BOOT

UNTIL I PINNED J 53 TO SHORT PINS 1 & 2
which is the pinning for ver revision 1.0 boards

TYAN you are seriously confusing your esteemed customer / client base.

I hope you realise that it was a tech at an asssembly plant who made the errors connecting j12

AND i spent hours of MY time trying to systematically find the problem myself.

After days of frustration with NO post / posts at all I started to call my local Australia Supplier he assured me that j53 had to be shorted and to forget what the " BLOODY" Motherboard User's Manual stated on PAGE 13.

TYAN I'M ONE OF THOSE SILLY "FOOLS" WHO "ALWAYS " READS THE BLOODY MANUAL.

Ain't much use readin' yours though !!!!!!!!!!!!
Right back to the first PC / XT's dumped onto the floors of warehouses here in Australia & then delivered to my first computer store ( i owned & operated a further 2 over the latter years.)
(I still haven't got my old windows 2000 professional installation from my EPOX AMD SOCKET A ATHLON TOWER SYSTEM to successfully boot using the S2460 board yet, neither a NEW windows 2000 pro installiation to install using the S2460 board. Going on what is in other threads on this site ...
