Tyan TIGER MP S-2460. Wow my first dual processor machine.
(2) Athlon 1.2 Ghz. MP's
Apacer 512 Meg. reg. PC2100 ram.
Ati RADEON 7000
Netgear GA302T NIC.
(3) Western Digital 80 Gig. 7200RPM HD's
(2) Case fans, copper heatsinks, CPU shims (copper), (2) HD coolers.
A-1 Electronics 400 W ATX PS.
Windows 2000 Server OS.

I built this BEAST in October 2001. Ran Very well for 3 months, then the PS 3.3v section went puff. Installed new A-1 Electronics PS, ran well for past year, and last night I lost another (???) PS. Machine starts to boot up and stalls. Reboot to CMOS, hardware monitor says everything is fine, but now fails to finish boot. No BIOS flashes / Updates or Setting changes.
This was my network server. I have digital thermometers monitoring cpu temps, case temp. and PS exhaust temp. All are normal.
Any Ideas? Solutions or Sugguestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Reggie
The 2640 was a first generation board and its memory timing margins extremely tight. It requires at least one stick of Registered RAM. Off hand I cannot recall if it all had to be. There was some discussion on this point. My experience suggests that it is unlikely for it to operate with mixed RAM. Very touchy and ensure you have the latest BIOS file since later flashes addressed memory timing problems

I replace the board with a 2466 and these are rock solid

If you have stability problems I suggest you supply the fans directly rather than from the board. this was one of the major changes from the earlier 2460 board also ensure VRM2 is kept cool since this seems to run hotter check with the BIOS monitor or a utility. May not be fully calibrated but they run consistently hotter and the outputs show gereater variation with possible implications for timing over time.
Hey guys a friend just gave me this motherboard, i had some questions about it, it says it takes up to 3 gb registered ram, does it HAVE TO be registered? or could i get some ram from like a computer store and just use that?

Ok so I flashed my bios, it didn't kill my comp or anything, and it boots up in a normal amount of time, but now instead of the old
failed
00error

I get the message that I am running non-mp processors which can lead to system instability. And my computer will continue to run in non-standard mode what's the deal? The processors I bought were palomino core duron 1.3 s which is what I have seen been used on the 2460. Any more ideas why it won't deal? thanks
You might want to try flashing your bios with the latest image from Tyan.

http://www.tyan.com/support/html/b_tg_mp.html

I could just be grabbing at straws here, but I had a CPU ID problem with my Tiger 230 and my second P3 1Ghz CPU that was resolved when I flashed the CMOS again. It may be worth your time if your current BIOS version predates the latest release (currently 1.05). Good luck.

Hey can anyone help me out? I heard here and there that a few people were dualing up new durons on a tiger 2460 board so I gave it a try, needless to say there have been problems but I have gotten through to a stable setup, windows 200 functioning properly and all, but it is only running one processor. At the startup since I first started putting everything together, it took about a minute to begin to boot which seems crazy, thenit registers 2 processors detected, then lists the hardware I currently had installed, then pauses AGAIN for what seem like forever, then posts a nice little cryptic

failed
00ERROR

then asks if I want to go to setup or just continue. This has got to have something to do with the other processor. I checked in the setup and both processors were putting out heat. What's the deal? Anyone? thanks
That's funny.

First, my S2460 never checked, and identified my XP CPUs as MP 1700+ (which AMD hasn't made, ever), before I upgraded to true MP CPUs. Secondly, if the contacts are bridged on the package, the CPU will be seen as an MP by the BIOS.

How are the CPUs identified during POST when you boot with a single XP?

I installed two 2000XP chips with the L5 bridge connected using the conductive paint (done correctly). They will work individually but when I put both chips on the motherboard bios does a chip ID check does anyone know how to disable the chip ID check. This is with all the bios flashed including the latest one. I have a feeling if it does not do the chip ID check it would work.

I'm using a Radeon 8500 w/128 MB on my system.

dual Athlon MP 1800+
768 MB (3x256) Crucial Micron PC2100 DDR cas=2.5
SB Live 5.1
D-Link NIC
Windows 2000 Professional w/DirectX 8.1

The 8500 has an issue with the BIOS setup utility: the font is corrupted after you leave setup, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to fix it.

Make sure you installed the AMD chipset AGP port drivers before trying to install the Catalyst driver pack, and update DirectX. I think the setup program hung the first time I installed, but the drivers came up anyway. I think I might've had to visit Device Manager and manually change the driver.
hi all,

i have built a few of these 2460's and i am currently working from one now. what i have is a problem flashing the beta 2460416.rom bios with the plash16.exe utility. i am booting with a dos boot disk and select f5 as soon as possible and i still get a "himem" error telling me to turn of my memory manager! even if i boot with no hdd's this happens? is it a bios/cmos function? or what? Please Help!

system spec:
Dual MP 2200+
1024mb unbuffer ecc memory pc2700 333mhz (two 512 sticks)
465w ps "amd recommended"
sb live audigy2
ati radeon 8500dv all-in-wonder

[ the pc2700 memory works fine with three prior 2460 systems i've built! also i have used dual xp 2000+ cpus on the last one i built!]

The reason for the attempt of flashing a beta bios was a last ditch effort to get the video card to work. This is the first ati 8500 card i have tried with this board. i have used my spare "ati expert 2000 pro" several times and it works fine with this board? i have tried everything i can possible think of! tyan says the 8500dv is supported, and ati agrees? any helpfull hints, or similar problems with ati 8500 series cards?!

i have tried to install the latest recommended ati catalyst drivers, i got to load all of the components but when it does finnally need to re-boot it hangs, i think it may be during the self test upon restart?

I hope i can get this to work, i would like to try the 9700 pro with my 2460 ugm which uses the same drivers.

?because it has a fire wire card built in?
?because it is conflicting with my sound card which was installed first?

Best Regards,
I have been having lots of problems with the s2460 with hard reboots of my computer. The cause appears to be ACPI, event id 4. It appears to be a well known problem as read in the links below.

One solution is to make the computer, under Device Manager, to be 'Standard PC'. But will this work with a dual processor system.

Also has anyone been brave enough to try the beta bios, 2460416, for the S2460? It claims to fix.
* Fixes Win XP ACPI Event Viewer issue
* Update MP Table
* Fix IRQ Routing

I do not think that I am brave enough to be the first. May be Tyan will get around to releasing this soon. After all their last update was March this year. How long does it take to fix this specific problem?

It's easy and safe to disable ACPI from the device manager in XP. Just right click on it in the device manager, choose update driver, click I will choose the driver to install, and click on Standard PC. Reboot the PC and it will redetect all your devices.

ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x71), which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/tech/onnow/BIOSAML.asp

To help ensure system stability on systems with legacy BIOS ASL implementations, Windows XP attempts to synchronize accesses to resources whenever possible. For example:
When a read or write access is detected to the CMOS/RTC index and data pair registers at I/O addresses 0x70 and 0x71, the operating system does the following:
§	Disables interrupts
§	Preserves the contents of the index (address) register
§	Allows the ASL code access to proceed
§	Restores the value of the index register
This process helps prevent a race condition in which the operating system writes the desired address to the index register and a BIOS method changes the address in the index register before the operating system can access the intended data register, causing the operating system to use the wrong index value.

Note: This approach cannot guarantee that the CMOS address register (0x70) will not be corrupted on multi-processor systems.
Hi.

I just solve my problem - realy the mobo is ok, but CPU - 2000+ XP - you must first unlock L5 bridge for MP functions. Just look at: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/articles.hwz?cid=2&ai...amp;page=1

Regards
