wow this sucks was this due to the PSU or external stuff? maybe a surge protecter on the rack isnt a bad idea. As far as the setup it sounds like an amazing design. I assume you have one rather small IDE drive in it where RH sits and the rest of the data ect is on the raid array which can be easily moved to a new server if a problem happens. Am i right in assuming this? Also, if this is true did you ever consider making a ghost image of that HD incase of a crash? This way you can restore your OS hd and re-configure it for the new server (if thats possible, im not a total linux guru).
And what company made this PSU again? Hmm lucky thing the RAID was still safe! Sander, I can honestly tell you I know what its like to deal with issues like this I am glad that you could get the site back up and running though, and I hope the companies will fork the replacement parts!
Yeaoch, I guess I can consider myself lucky that the only time I've lost a power supply, that was the worst of my problems. No doubt the next time one goes on me it will be one of those "mission critical" times when I need the system running the most. Murphy's law being what it is.

We were up since November of last year, but started rebooting about a month ago as it kept locking up. As you'll understand from reading the column there wasn't much we could do from remote, other than rebooting it.
Mike,

In a nutshell:

RAID0:
You can increase the performance of a storage subsystem, e.g. harddisk by using two that both write/read part of the data. This is called a RAID0, striping configuration. Basically the data is cut into even and uneven bits and each drive get either the even or uneven bits, naturally maximum data throughput doubles, as the data is formed by combining the data from both drives.

RAID1:
This configuration is meant for security, a second drive is added that exactly mirrors the first one. If either drive stops working the other one will still have all the data up to the moment the other drive stopped.

RAID10
This is a combination of the above, so a striped mirror, a total of four drives are needed which are put in RAID1 and then the second RAID1 array mirrors the first. This is what we use on the Hardware Analysis webserver. This is the best performance and security with zero downtime, as up to two drives can go defective and we'll still be able to access the data.

RH9:
RedHat 9, the latest version of the RedHat Linux operating system, you didn't think we'd run this site on Micro$oft software do you? We get better performance and uptime, as well as much more customizing done by using this open source OS.

NMI:
NonMaskableInterrupt, these are errors or warnings that tell you something is amiss at the hardware level of a PC or server.

Config of our current webserver is as follows:

Dual 2.8GHz Intel Xeons with HyperThreading
2 GB DDR266 memory, 4x512MB Crucial Registered
Tyan Tiger I7500 motherboard, Intel e7500 chipset
4 x Seagate Cheetah 15K3, 37GB, 15.000-rpm Ultra 320 HDs
HDs are in a RAID10 array, totaling 68GB in capacity
Adaptec 2200S dual channel Ultra 320 SCSI RAID controller
Chenbro 2U rack case with Zippy 460-watts powersupply
RedHat 9 Linux with Apache, PhP and MySQL

Kind regards,

What is RAID10?
What is Rh9?
What are NMI errors?
And out of curiousity, what are the specs on the servers? =)
