I have the same trouble with my computer of crashing. When the computer comes back, I get that error message "During the last boot-up.......". This computer with the problem is not connected to internet, has no games and no video. I am the only grown up using that computer. It is still on WINDOWS 95.

a) I restart the computer by pulling the plugs on the monitor and the computer. After a reasonable period, (possibly letting the CPU cool down), I plug in the monitor and wait till I get on the screen "no signal". Then I plug in the computer and start. It goes directly to that error message. Then I click on F10 and click YES. After that the computer starts its startup routine with no difficulty.

b) I have been told that the INTEL PEMTIUM CPU is guaranteed for life. Will INTEL replace my CPU? How do I go about getting INTEL to replace the CPU?

Thanks for any help I can receive.
Oh and I should mention that I accidentally gave the box a bit of a hard knock half an hour before the first symptoms appeared. I dont have to hide anything here. So the diagnosis of a misplaced fan block may be true, and in fact would appear to now be correct.

And as for the first post in the series, the clue is that you let the kids play Scooby Doo on the PC for their birthday. My money is on the theory that they had an emotional computer experience as all young kids do and had a bit of a spat and jumped around and knocked the computer (hard), slightly displacing the fan.

However, in that case, the chip eventually fried through lack of repositioning the fan. The kids never came clean. You need to teach your kids to be more honest.

Anyway Brenton, thanks for the advice. It saved me the price of a 1.9Ghz Pentium IV chip.
Thats right on the money.

I removed the battery to the BIOS, to refresh it from scratch, and I repositioned the fan on the chip. Just made sure it was a nice snuggly fit.

I pulled the chip out and had a look as well, but that is not recommended for everyone.

Everything seems to be back in order.
Another thing to double check is to make sure your cpu fan was/is on COMPLETELY straight otherwise it may overheat, freeze and fry.
Has happened to me before in my profession many times.
Han,

After playing one of the most demanding 3D games, Colin MacRae Rally 3 last night, my computer got dumped to a black screen. After a few reboots and a quick CD burn of all vital work and settings files, I think the PC has finally gone. I think I was allowed to access my PC and files about 6 times. After opening up the box and watching the PC boot up, I can see that the video card, sound card and CD drives are functioning normally. I think the problem is therefore one of three things.

(a) CPU is overheating because of bad voltages from the motherboard. Once the CPU gets too hot, it simply shuts down to avoid damage (?)
(b) The CPU is on its way out and is not operating at the right speed at which it is intended to operate, hence the error.
(c) The Hard Disk could be causing problems, but my suspicion is that this is less likely.

I guess that maybe by this time, you have fixed your problem and discovered is source. Your problem sounded very similar to mine.
I forgot to add that all elemenents of my system were at some point in time replaced by new components. And the problem persisted. The only thing I never replaced is the HD. The soundcard I had on the other MOBO was and PCI one. My conclusion was that it was most likely my HD causing the problems but as I said there was no problem with any of the tests I performed on it. (Did a number of them as well)
I seem to have the same odd problem. I've had this problem for about 2 years now.
I own a:

AMD XP +1800
1 GB RAM
Maxtor 35 GB HD
MSI K7T Turbo 2 MOBO
GeForce 4 ti4200
Sound is OnChip
Other than that I installed the latest VIA and Detonator drivers.

I ran multiple tests on my HD and my RAM. Windows XP told me a crash had occurred. I sent the error report to MS and I got a report back saying that it was a memory problem. So I checked the memory again with a tool they (MS) recommended. Did 11 tests 3 times and it was all OK.

I'm sort of at a loss here. My computer used to only crash to the desktop or to a reset during 3d games. But now it will even crash from the desktop to a full reset. Even when I'm doing absolutely nothing at all!

There's no notice of anything when it crashes BTW it just does without giving a warning before or reason after the crash. My computer just acts like nothing happened. I'm wondering why they took away those nice blue screens that would tell me what the heck was going

I was hoping someone might point me in the right direction regarding this problem.

Kind Regards,
Han.
I have tried clearing the CMOS without any results. I followed the instructions on the motherboard manual for jumping but still nothing.

I was also wondering about the videocard. How do I test my Video Card? I assume I insert a replacement to see if the system works?

Would a video game cause such problems?

Try clearing the CMOS, there should be a jumper near the battery...

This could also be the VID card, I managed to burn my GF2 out after O\C it, which resulted in some major hardware issues (said 'unknown hard read error' after loading windows, but before loading the desktop). Does the PC make any BEEPS when you push the power button? A long beep and 3 fast ones indicate a display problem... I recently replaced the GF2 with a GF4mx 440se, and the PC is working fine again.

I wonder if this could have been the games fault? :\

No I have not overclocked the CPU. To be honest, I am not sure how to do it.
Have you been overclocking your CPU? Also, I'd try putting in different memory if you have it and just see if anything happens. Try to eliminate as many possibilities as you can by swapping parts out for others and checking to see if the problem persists.

Since my posting, I was able to confirm that my monitor and keyboard are fine. I as well cleared the RTC RAM to see if my setup parameters were off. I continue to have no luck. I rechecked all my internal connections to the motherboard and all seem fine.
I therefore assume that it is either my CPU or motherboard?
We have had this new system running since January. All was fine until yesterday.

Events happened as follows while I was at work.
My wife checked emails.
Kid's playing a scooby doo game for first time (B-day present) and computer froze up with mouse not working. CD would not eject. My wife shut down computer. They came back later and unplugged the microphone from the video card to hook up to monitor. (long story- it never worked) They turned computer on and monitor did not work. Monitor's green light went orange. They attempted again and nothing happened. They were able to take disk out and they turned computer off. I came home and attempted to investigate problem. Turned on computer and monitor worked.

Computer in safe mode with the following message: "During the last boot-up, your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting. Your system is now working in safe mode. To optimize the system performance and reliability, make sure the CPU speed conforms to the specifications of your CPU." Unfortunately the mouse and keyboard were frozen and I was unable to do anything. I shut down the computer. Now we do not get any image on the monitor. I tried rebooting with windows XP boot disk and nothing happens. As well I checked for loose connections by disconnecting and reconnecting all the lines and from the receptacle. Still nothing.

HELP!!! What should I do?????

System
Processor - AMD XP 2200
Ram 512MB PC-2700 DDR 333
Motherboard - A7V 333-X
Hard Drive - Western Digital 1800 JB
CD Writer - LG 32X10X40
Video Card - ATI All In Wonder 8500DV
Monitor - LG 795FT Plus Flatron
CPU Fan/heatsink - Volcano 7+
